A familiar feature of digital messaging apps, the typing indicator holds out the promise of communication. It turns the act of writing into a performative gesture, while introducing into the exchange a sense of anticipation, anxiety, the drama and tension of suspended attention. The “Someone is typing…” series draws out the singular effects of this interface convention. The works also place historical figures before our contemporary keyboards, inviting us to imagine what these departed icons might have to say to us today. Playing with the visual signs of digital communication, the series considers how technology shapes our experiences of reading and writing, our perceptions of presence and absence.
