Innisfree Garden is a 150-acre oasis in the middle of upstate New York. Designed in the late 1920s, the gardens are influenced in design by the work of 8th century Chinese poet, painter and garden maker Wang Wei. After a full day of walking the gardens, just as golden hour was approaching, I was stopped in my tracks by the site of two lone chairs under a willow tree by the marsh. Suddenly, all of my senses turned on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am safe here
Did you leave your love for me under the willow tree?
I feel it on my skin in the breeze
I can no longer see you, still I reach for you
I cannot touch the contour of your hand, so I sit and wait,
then softly I sense you all around me
Should I scream with pain and anger
Will the ground shake and the water rise
We made a promise on this hallowed ground
humbled by the presence of our eyes filled with love
I walk the perimeter of the pond each morning
to let my heart be at peace
You are everywhere
Two chairs, one love
This is our Pledge
