A Delicate Howl

Humans are strange about joy. As we grow up, we trust it less because it has no direct financial benefit. We turn hobbies into businesses. Walks have become ways for us to fulfil quotas. A day off has become the day filled with catch-up work. And fun has become something we don't need to prioritise... But I think we do. Children understand something adults spend years forgetting. Not everything needs to lead somewhere. Some things are worth doing because they make you feel more alive while you are doing them. Play is not childish. It is one of the ways a nervous system remembers the world is not only danger and duty. Survival and stress. People become dull when they stop playing. They start to die on the inside because they stop believing in the whimsical. Play keeps a part of us unfinished and restless. It reminds us there are still parts of ourselves we have not met yet. Parts that do not need to be useful. Parts that do not need to make sense. Parts that only need enough room to keep growing. Being alive is supposed to feel like something.
