Humans are very good at calling control "protection". We remove the animals that scares us. We fence the land from "outsiders" We dam rivers. We burn more. It't too much. We kill what inconveniences us and call it management. The danger is gone. The edges are cleaner. But then something starts to break our control. The river finds another way through. Other vermins and insects crowd in. Nature has the power to expose the consequences of our control constantly. We think control means nothing surprises us.But the only constant is change. Nature is unpredictable to our limited comprehensions. We keep trying to remove the parts that make us uncomfortable until the thing we wanted to protect no longer knows how to protect itself. That is the arrogance of control. Believing we understand enough to decide what belongs and what does not. Believing inconvenience is the same thing as imbalance. I think about how often humans do this outside of nature too. We control people because uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. We control outcomes because we are afraid of what happens if we do not. We organise everything so tightly into routines that nothing has room to expand and thrive. Then we wonder why it all feels pointless.. Because it is.
