Abridged
Abridged

If you think about it for even a moment, it's obvious where the word "abridged" comes from. It means "shortened", and clearly it must have resulted from people reducing the amount of travel time they needed between two points by building a bridge somewhere in the middle. Of course, I think there's something much deeper going on here...

The urge to build bridges to connect two places in nature may be as old as humanity itself; think about how many logs have been knocked down and rolled over to cross a river or chasm. Nowadays, our bridges are made of steel and concrete, but in the not too distant past, they were simply repurposed natural materials that could be found nearby. We bent the very fabric of our environment to our will, we warped space (and by consequence, time) itself, just to be able to shave a few minutes off our overall travel time.

All of this has me wondering... What will be the next modern analogue to these bridges?

This shot was taken during my first trip abroad with my first child. I'm not sure whether she enjoyed the landscape views at six months old, but the rest of us sure did! We managed to catch a beautiful sunrise at William A. Switzer Provincial Park in Alberta, and spent the rest of the day enjoying Jasper National Park.
