Proof of Comedy explores the nature of value in contemporary art. Inspired by Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, this 1/1 digital artwork questions why some things are deemed valuable and others are not. By minting and then burning this piece, I’m engaging with the fleeting nature of ownership in the digital art space. Though the artwork’s token still exists on the blockchain, it has been sent to the burn address, rendering it inaccessible and questioning the idea of permanence and scarcity in art. The banana image used here is sourced from a CC0-licensed photograph by the late David Datuna, titled Banana_duct_taped_to_fridge_as_a_reminder_to_eat_less_meat. Datuna’s work invites reflection on authorship, legacy, and the value we ascribe to objects, even after the creator’s passing in 2022. His image, now in the public domain, serves as the foundation for questioning how art, once detached from its creator, continues to hold meaning. This piece marks the beginning of a journey to explore art’s shifting value, inviting viewers to question what makes something valuable, why art is perceived differently across time, and how the digital space challenges traditional notions of ownership and permanence.
