The Age Grade, known as Ogbo or Ulo is a group of men born within a given span of time ranging between 3 to 6 years. An individual upon approaching 30 years is considered matured to become part of an age grade. These young men are composed into a group in preparation for initiation into the social system. This signals the readiness of that group to participate in social, economic, and political development of their town. The age grade system dates as far back as the 1800s and was strictly a male affair. Considering the very important and significant role women play in society, the women’s wing came to be in the 1950s and has remained fully active ever since. Each group is named based on the prevailing circumstances at the time of birth of the members. Significantly, they learn a particular dance which can be termed Egwu Ogbo (Age Grade Dance). This dance consists of choreographed steps, a composed music and is performed with a certain costume. On invitation, the dance is mostly performed during festivities and social events like masquerade festivals, burials, marriages, initiations and so on. The age grade constitutes an indispensable vehicle for governance, administration, and overall well-being in many Igbo societies.
