Hybris was the goddess or personified spirit (daimona) of insolence, hubris, violence, reckless pride, arrogance, and outrageous behavior in general. Her Roman name was Petulantia.
Hybris was the daughter of the primordial gods, Nyx (Night) and Erebus (Darkness) or of Aether (Air) and Gaea (Earth). In some accounts, her mother was Dyssebia (Impiety).
She was also sometimes called the "Mad Goddess", because of her violent temper.
Hybris often appeared to mortals as a beautiful woman, but only if she could catch them unawares. Hybris' powers were so great that she could turn into anything at will: an eagle, a cloud, or even a storm.
Hybris was the goddess of pride and arrogance; her priests were given the task of teaching people not to be arrogant. They were also supposed to teach young men how to control their tempers – especially when they saw women who were beautiful enough to make them lose all self.
The Romans had several words for Hybris, among which are pugnaciousa, meaning "aggressive" or "proud".
