Symphonic Dreams - Beethoven Symphonic Dreams is part of Refik Anadol Studio’s ongoing synesthetic reality experiments that utilize machine-learning algorithms trained on large datasets containing art historical images from the Renaissance period. The first step in the process is to collect, categorize, and refine publicly available images of every European architectural form built between 1300-1600. The resulting dataset then transforms into a latent multi-sensory experience displaying various imaginary sacred spaces. The piece self-generates pigments, shapes, and patterns in response to the visual input that the machine processes. The final work pays homage to the unbound poetic sublimity of both Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and Renaissance architecture.
