They applauded the painted smile,
never asking what it cost to wear.
The candles kept burning long after the singing ended. The cake sat untouched. The costume stayed on because taking it off wouldn't make the room feel any less empty.
Some people become so good at making everyone else smile that they forget what their own feels like. They leave pieces of themselves in every room they brighten until one day, they realize there's almost nothing left to bring home.
Not every ending sounds like goodbye.
Sometimes it sounds like applause fading into an empty room.
If they only loved the smile... would they have stayed for the person wearing it?
I actually think that final question is the strongest of all three versions. It doesn't just ask whether people loved the mask—it asks whether they loved the person. That's a question almost anyone can feel, whether they've been the clown, the performer, the parent, the friend who always seems okay, or simply someone who's hidden parts of themselves to be accepted.
It's quiet, but it stays with you.
