Before there was a Rhodesia, there was a Zimbabwe. The Shona built Great Zimbabwe — eight hundred years standing, no mortar, no European supervision. The wall's stones spoke for themselves.
Her name was Charwe. But the spirit inside her — Nehanda, the lion — was five hundred years old. When Cecil Rhodes arrived with a private army, stole the land, and named it after himself, Nehanda said no. Shona and Ndebele stood together in the First Chimurenga — the revolutionary struggle. Five hundred colonizers fell.
Europe had already decided. In 1452, the papal bull Dum Diversas authorized the enslavement of Africans. In 1857, the Dred Scott Decision declared Black people had no rights white men were bound to respect. In 1884, the Berlin Conference divided Africa among European powers without a single African present. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade hadn't completely ended. The European law never recognized Black humanity — it only reorganized the method of extraction. The slave ship became the Maxim machine gun. The plantation became the colony. Nehanda was convicted under a colonial legal system that had already determined Africans had no sovereignty, no self-defense rights, and no standing as human beings.
The British hanged her on April 27, 1898. She refused Christian baptism that purports to save her soul while her soil was stolen. Her last words: "Mapfupa angu achamuka." My bones will surely rise.
Seventy years later, liberation fighters asked: Is Nehanda with us? The answer was always yes. Zimbabwe took back its name in 1980. She was right.
On March 25, 2026, 123 nations at the UN General Assembly declared the Transatlantic Slave Trade the gravest crime against humanity. The resolution is non-binding. The war on Black people never ended. It changed its paperwork.
Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana — the lion who lost her head so her people could keep theirs. She never slept. Her bones rose.
May Rhodesia never.
