Sugar, Sticky Skin & A Slow Crime in Room 1518

I walked toward the hotel through the evening.
Each step pulsed in my temples with foreboding and anticipation.
I didn’t yet know I was looking for that very room.
And I didn’t know the room already knew about me.
It was waiting.
With pleasure.

The journey was long. I walked through months and years of doubt, through the corridors of my own soul, where every door creaked with the terror of being opened. I stripped myself layer by layer, not the body, but something far more intimate. Fears hidden beneath my tongue. Desires buried in my ribs. Hopes clenched so tightly they drew blood.

The concierge didn’t ask for documents. He simply handed me the key, heavy, brass, warm, as if it had already rested in someone’s palm. 1518. The numbers glowed in the lobby’s half-light.

Did the staircase spiral upward? Or downward? I lost my sense of direction somewhere between the tenth and twelfth floors. The walls were upholstered in velvet the color of dried blood. When I brushed them in passing, the fabric left a sweet dust on my fingers. Sugar. There was sugar everywhere, in the air, on my lips, on my skin. It clung, made every movement slow, viscous, obscene.

Room 1518 greeted me with silence. The bed stood at the center, wide, its ivory sheets rumpled as if someone had already lain there. Or was yet to. Time moved differently here, forward and backward at once. I sat on the edge of the bed, and it shuddered beneath me. Through the half-open window drifted a hot, humid wind scented with something I didn’t have a name for. In the mirror opposite, I saw myself: fever-bright eyes, parted lips, ragged breath. This was the one who had been walking here his entire life, without ever knowing it.

I was not alone.

The image didn’t materialize at once. At first, it was only a sensation. A presence at the edge of vision. Movement in a corner that didn’t exist. But gradually, like a photograph blooming in acid, it became real. The one. The one who had met me for thousands of years: in dreams, in fleeting glances from strangers on the street, in reflections where, for a split second, someone else stood in my place.

Sweet.
Alluring.
Unbearably magnetic.

…

She stood by the window. Or sat on the edge of the table. Or lay beside me on the bed. I couldn’t tell. Her form was mutable, fluid, like wax beneath a candle flame. But the essence was unchanged: she was the embodiment of everything I desired and feared to desire. Every feature was painfully familiar, ecstatic in its recognition. Every gesture echoed fantasies I had never dared to speak aloud.

Desire was a strange word for what filled the room. It was physical, tangible. It coiled around my wrists, slid along my spine, whispered at the nape of my neck in a language I didn’t understand, but felt. It was divine in its forbidden nature. Like the first fruit. The first fire. The first murder.

Somewhere high above, beyond the ceiling, beyond the sky, I sensed a presence. Not judging. Watching. The gods were watching. They always are. And this is their favorite spectacle.

She stepped closer. Or I did. Or the room contracted, tightening its sugar-slick embrace around us. I don’t remember who reached out first. I remember only the touch, electric, burning, sticky with that cursed sugar coating everything. Skin to skin. Breath to breath. Two shadows entwined in a dance that began at the creation of the world and will end with its collapse.

The crime unfolded slowly. It didn’t begin here, but with the first step toward the hotel. With the first doubt. With the first fracture in the armor I’d worn my entire life. It was a crime against my former self. Against every rule I had learned. Against every wall I had built. And I committed it with pleasure. With terror. With the inevitability of one who knows: there is no road back.

The sheets were cold and yet burned our bodies. The fabric clung to skin, tacky with sugar and sweat. Every movement was slow, ceremonial, as if we were performing a ritual, ancient and unforgivable. Time stretched into a viscous thread. Into caramel. Into honey. Into something so slow that each second lasted an eternity. She was everywhere: above me, beneath me, inside me, around me. Boundaries dissolved. I no longer knew where I ended and she began. Where reality slipped into sinful vision. Where the earthly fused with the divine.

…

Somewhere far away, the gods kept watching.
Impassive.
Interested.
With pleasure.

…

And then, at the very peak of that slow, sticky ecstasy, when the world had collapsed to the size of Room 1518, when breath had become a single thing, when all borders vanished completely, the end arrived.

For a moment, shorter than a breath, I felt something cold at my temple. The cold of the ultimate end. The ultimate beginning. The point where everything converges and fractures at once. The barrel of an invisible gun. Or the finger of fate. Or the touch of the one who had been waiting for me here since the dawn of time.

I didn’t know what would come next.

I didn’t want to know.

Knowledge would have destroyed the magic. Killed the mystery. Turned everything ordinary. The image began to dissolve. Or perhaps it was still with me. I couldn’t tell. Room 1518 would not release me. It soaked into my skin along with the sugar. Lodged itself in memory with the scent of what I still haven’t named. Settled in my soul alongside this slow, sticky, divinely forbidden crime.

I am still here.
Or I have already left.
Or I never came at all.

Sugar on my lips.
Sticky skin.
Eternity in Room 1518.
