You stumble past the fluorescent glare and the stalled crowd, already resigned to re-entering the security checkpoint loop. At the far edge: a “Designated Shelter.”
Permission turned into architecture: perforated walls, clean glass, ventilation and visibility. An isolated buffer for something the rest of the system would rather pretend doesn’t exist.
Then the button. Click. Buzz. Light and heat arrive instantly, like the system briefly remembers how to respond in human time.
I didn’t even need to smoke.
I needed an exit node, a pocket where autonomy still feels real,
even if only inside the sanctioned shelter.
