THE MERGE

This is my submission for Claire Silver’s AI CONTEST 9, entitled THE MERGE. AI / Mixed Media This work takes the idea of division and collapses it into a single body. At its center stands one figure, split down the middle. One side is human, imperfect and exposed, overtaken by moss and flowers. It represents nature, fragility, memory, and everything in us that grows without being engineered. The other side is constructed from discarded laptop parts. Screws, chips, wires, and circuits replace flesh. This side does not grow organically. It is assembled, optimized, and repeatable. Together, they form one body, because the moment we are living in is no longer about separation. It is about coexistence. The head is a screen. It plays a video of my real face, which gradually glitches and transforms into an AI version of itself. Here, authorship and identity begin to blur. I teach the system to see me. In return, it reveals how easily a human presence can be reduced, copied, and transformed into data. The face exists in between, neither fully human nor fully artificial. The figurine is filmed and placed inside an AI-generated frame composed of human organs fused with machine parts. Brains, hearts, kidneys, and livers intertwine with circuit boards, screws, and wires. This frame is not ornamental. It represents the environment we now inhabit, where biology and technology are inseparable, continuously shaping and sustaining one another. THE MERGE reflects a divided experience. For some, AI has become a companion and collaborator. For others, it represents exhaustion, loss, and the fear of being replaced. This work does not attempt to resolve that tension. It holds both realities at once, within the same form. There is no clear triumph and no clear collapse. Only a body suspended in transformation. Growth alongside erosion. Curiosity alongside fatigue. We are not approaching this future. We are already living inside it. Whatever AI becomes next is shaped by us, just as we are being reshaped by it. This is not a story of humans versus machines. It is a story of becoming. WE.
