Traveling on the New York subway I saw endless fascinating characters. The man in the shot initially caught my eye. I had framed the shot using the door of the train carriage and just as I was preparing to shoot, on walked a woman who looked like she had time traveled from the 60’s. It looked like a scene straight out of a movie. But this was no movie, it was real life. It was a moment that highlights the importance of improvisation in street photography. Had I not reacted instantly the shot would have been lost forever. There are no second takes. It was the decisive moment.
