The Ocean is timeless, full of creative memories and inspiration for me. The vast expanse of water, which embraces the shoreline plays a huge part in my creative and personal life. The nostalgia of walking along the high tide mark at the beach after a storm looking for seashells and other washed up treasure is my idea of paradise. This feeling has been with me since I was a child growing up on the tropical beaches of Northern Australia. Now as an adult these childhood adventures are being revived as my children love the whisper of the ocean and feel drawn to its ever-changing personality.
We often walk the tideline together, but lost in our own worlds of imagination and anticipation of disovering something special. Afterwards we arrange the oceanic treasures into a fruit salad of tropical delights. Often leaving them at the beach after we have taken a photo. I am reminded of this quote by Steven Wright “I have the world's largest collection of seashells. I keep it on all the beaches of the world... perhaps you've seen it."
Sometimes we will bring home the shells and lay them on top of a flat bed scanner to capture a very high resolution image, which I print as large as possible when exhibiting. Many off these shells are then returned to the beach where they were once collected. These shells are from the Coral Sea of Northern Australia. A place where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. The result here is a tapestry of bright and colourful textural wonders, which pay tribute to the ocean creatures who once called them home.
We all see seashells by the seashore. I look at these seashells and can visualise the sound of ocean waves breaking on the shore in a never ending, hypnotic orchestra of colourful emotions. The repetitive and soothing nature of the ocean is medicine to the human spirit. There is something timeless and pure about the big blue as it washes away the dust of everyday life.
