Symptoms ♨ Transmutation

In Symptoms ♨ Transmutation (2025), Iain Ball revisits and reconfigures his landmark 2009 project Symptoms ♨, a body of work that fused digital collage, found images, and assemblages of objects scavenged from the detritus of consumer culture. Emerging from the milieu of post-internet art, Ball’s practice has long probed the unstable intersections between ecology, technology, and the infrastructures of late capitalism. Now, more than a decade later, Transmutation subjects those earlier works to the generative processes of AI. Each piece becomes a recursive mutation — not simply reimagined, but metabolized by algorithmic vision into forms that oscillate between the organic and the synthetic, the uncanny and the banal. Corporate logos, plant life, fleshly prosthetics, and digital residue collapse into composite organisms, suggesting a speculative ecology where bodies, data, and commodities continually hybridize. This return through AI is not nostalgic but diagnostic. Ball exposes how artistic gestures, once bound to the materiality of found objects and screen grabs, are themselves transmutable symptoms of the systems that produce them. In linking his early post-internet vocabulary with contemporary tools of machine learning and blockchain-based circulation, Ball positions Symptoms ♨ Transmutation as both a continuation and mutation of his practice — a feedback loop of cultural matter, forever shifting between states of embodiment, simulation, and technological capture.
